Downloads: Thanks Myspace!…I Needed That Penny!
Is there something I'm missing with Myspace and their whole download/streaming payout structure for music? Or is there something that Myspace is missing with their respect for musicians and their music?
The other day, I logged into my downloads account and saw that I had earned a penny from Myspace Music. So I thought…well honestly, I don't know what I thought exactly! So I clicked on the link for the details on this huge payout of one penny. You see, I was thinking, well, maybe they had played 30 seconds of one of my songs and they are wanting to pay me for it. Ha ha! Silly me, now why would anyone in the music business ever choose to do something ethical? So anyway, after clicking on this link for the "details" of my big shiny penny, I saw that I had ten streams! Yes, I had ten streams and had earned one whole friggin' penny! At this point I had a lot more thoughts happening and they went like this, "That blank blank blank Myspace paid me one blank blank blank penny for ten blank blank blank songs?" (Blanks really don't convey the strong emotion/hate I suddenly had for this whole Myspace Music thing!)
So, as it turns out, the really nice thieves/people at Myspace were actually paying me for my music! Great! Living the dream baby!..."Yea, I get spins...people pay me royalties and stuff!" Woo hoo! Yes, the songs that I had paid about two thousand dollars a piece to record and produce with a top industry producer. The same songs that had been licensed by major TV shows and networks were finally bringing in some money!…Kinda! I was getting paid, but at .0011 to .0066 cents a song, I mean, wouldn't a slap in the face be a little bit more respectful? Maybe?
Well, I am sure some of you are thinking that I should be grateful for my penny. Okay! Okay! I get it! Maybe I should be a little more grateful for my penny. So I am trying to take on a new attitude. I'm going to try to think positive about this whole "royalty" thing. I think I will invest half of the penny and travel on the other half!…or maybe even put it towards recording another song? Hmmm! Thanks Myspace, Tom…you guys are great!
