Is the ASVAB a good study guide for general assesment test for college?
I havent done fractions or things that I learned in HS math and science for years.... I am going to be taking an assesment test to see where I fall in Math and English, is the ASVAB a good study guide for that since it pretty much covers all subjects?
Or do you know a better study guide?
It would be better then nothing if it is your only resource, but since your concern here is college, you should stick to college placement tests like the SATs and ACTs (well, in your specific case, their study guides) to get an idea where the college will rank you and be prepared. The GED study guides would also work well.
You could also ask your prospective school if they recommend anything to study off of, some offer online resources, and if you just search their are some free online sites that help you study for the GED/SAT, and I'm sure ACT as well though I have never looked for those specifically.
The ASVAB is an easier then the SAT/ACTs on college entrance type material, although it does cover the same basics. It's just a much easier and more generic test, but then again it has to be since the SATs and ACTs only test a few key areas, where as the ASVAB has to cover every basic testing area for every military career across all the services.
Also the SATs/ACTs are essentially 'officer' tests in the type of people they're looking to rank, where as the ASVAB is more an 'enlisted' level one as well. Again it will work on a general level, but when you look at their target goals and target audiance you can see why better matches exist. I also tend to agree with the others in that the GED is written closer to the ASVAB level, yet would target your goals much more specifically.
Also truthfully at most those college entrance exams are pretty easy. If you can do high school level math and english you'll test high enough to get in the 100 level classes or above and not take remedial classes, and you have to score phenominally well to test out of the 101 classes altogether. They're heavily weighted towards people getting results in the middle.
So the biggest thing is don't worry about them too much. Their is only so much studying you're going to be able to do for them, you likely either know it already (or can relearn it in a day or two), or you won't.
